What to Eat in Bica: A Local’s Guide
Wondering what to eat in Bica? This steep little neighbourhood between Cais do Sodré and Bairro Alto is one of the most charming corners of Lisbon, full of tiled houses, narrow streets, and the famous yellow funicular. It is small, so a local’s shortlist helps. Wishbone sits right in the middle of it, frying fresh Japanese karaage on Rua da Boavista.
Here is a local’s take on what to eat in Bica, and where the fried chicken fits in.

What to eat in Bica
Bica is a residential village inside the city. You will find old tascas serving grilled fish and bifanas, a few pastelarias for a morning pastel de nata, and small modern kitchens tucked into the slope.
The neighbourhood rewards walking. Wander down from Santa Catarina or up from Cais do Sodré and you pass most of it in ten minutes, us included, at Rua da Boavista 14. Arriving by train? See our guide to lunch near Cais do Sodré station.
The karaage that put Bica on the map
Karaage is Japanese fried chicken, marinated overnight and fried light and shattering-crisp to order. It is the dish people now walk into Bica for, and it earned a Guía Repsol Solete award in 2026.
Try the signature karaage sandwich at €11.50, a box of fried chicken pieces to share, or the karaage chicken bowl over sushi rice. Vegans get the same crunch with our plant-based mushroom sandwich. See it all on the karaage menu.
Make it a walking food day
Bica is best eaten slowly, across a whole afternoon. Start with a coffee up top, ride the funicular, and come to us for lunch or an early dinner in the middle, just up from the market and the best fried chicken near Time Out Market.
Right beside the funicular you will find one of the neighbourhood’s best food stops. Read our guide to the best food near the Elevador da Bica for that corner.
